She started to follow his tweets, and the desire to make the difference was growing in her heart day by day. She thought of doing a birthday book for his upcoming birthday, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy her will to create something big and important regards the ISF.
Checking Ian’s tweets Natalie came across St Tammany Humane Society : a no-no kill shelter located in Ian’s hometown :Covington,LA .
Natalie had his own personal experience with a local shelter when she had to leave her cat Minime there for 6 months due to a temporary job contract that sent her to travel all around the country. When she came back Minime wasn’t there anymore: she was told that the shelter practicises euthanasia to the animals that aren’t being adopted after they’ve been kept there for 6 months.
Remembering this fact she decided to contact St Tammany Humane Society’s Executive Director : Vaughn Maurice. The two started to collaborate and Paws 4 a Cause was borned and officially launched as The Annual Ian Somerhalder Birthday Project on September 23rd, 2010.
After only a month and a half of steady campaigning, the fans of Ian Somerhalder and The Vampire Diaries raised $11,100 for the shelter. The ammount was presented to Ian at Unleashed: Bash on the Bayou 2010.
The project keeps going on. The preparations for Unleashed 2011 are in progress as well as the donations people keep sending to P4AC. Up to now they’ve already raised more than $20.000 and we’re only in April!
I really hope that this article will inspire the rest of you who haven’t donated yet. Natalie’s project should be an example for all of you, as well as the St Tammany Humane Society should ( I’ll say must!) be THE example for all the shelters around the world. Animals are our best friends, and they experience feelings like we do. Don’t let them alone just because we don’t speak the same language. Open your heart and your mind: become their voice!
